Frequently Asked Questions
A 3 is the minimum passing score and earns credit at most large public universities. A 4 earns credit at most competitive private colleges. A 5 is required for credit at selective schools like MIT, Harvard, and Stanford, and puts you in the top 8–20% of all test-takers depending on the subject.
Very accurate — typically within one composite point of actual scoring. The calculators use the official College Board scoring formula and historical cutoff data from 2022–2024. College Board adjusts cutoffs each year, so treat your result as a highly informed estimate rather than a guarantee.
AP scores for the 2026 exams are expected in mid-July 2026, typically the week after Independence Day (July 4). College Board releases scores on a rolling schedule. You access your scores at cbaccount.collegeboard.org.
AP scores do not expire. College Board stores them indefinitely and you can send scores to colleges at any time. However, most colleges only accept AP credit earned within the past 5–10 years for course placement. Check each school's policy.
It depends on the school and subject. Most large public universities accept a 3. Competitive private colleges often require a 4 or 5. Highly selective schools (Ivy League, MIT, Caltech) generally require a 5. Use the College Board AP Credit Policy search tool to find your specific school's requirements.
